What is a Celebrant?

A independent celebrant is qualified to officiate formal ceremonies, such as weddings, funerals, or namings, and create ceremonies that are as individual as the people themselves.

So, they’re like a vicar or priest then? No. They don’t conduct religious ceremonies “in the name of God”. So, they’re like a Humanist then? No. Humanists don’t include any religious content at all, whereas a Celebrant will.

Rather than focusing on their own beliefs or faith, a celebrant will create a ceremony which focuses on the wishes, values and beliefs of the people and the families the ceremony is for. They can, therefore, may be non-religious, include some religious elements or even spiritual symbolism.

The best independent celebrants are professionally trained and are committed to a programme of continual professional development, as well as being a member of a recognised organisation. And, they often bring extensive knowledge and skills from other careers and life experiences.

Committed to creating a unique ceremony, a celebrant will work with you to include content which is truly reflective of the loves, beliefs, cultures, passions, and personality of the individuals involved.

What’s important is that you work with someone who feels like a good fit for you and your family. If you are not sure, look again at the options local to you and/or speak to your funeral director.
