What is Direct Cremation?

Direct cremation (or unattended cremation as it is more formally known) is where a person is cremated without a funeral ceremony taking place at the same time or location. So, the deceased is brought directly to the crematorium and a service is not held in the chapel.

There are some benefits to this option; the creation costs are more affordable and, not having to consider a funeral, means that it is often quicker. A direct cremation also allows the family to have more time to plan a farewell ceremony.

Sometimes, a Funeral or Celebration of Life is held at the same time to coincide with the cremation but at a different location. Or a Memorial or Ash Scattering can be held at a later date which can, of course, then include the person’s ashes.

Although this option has its benefits, it’s worth considering what the physical presence of a coffin within the funeral space means: a ceremony at the time of cremation plays a significant role is the family’s acceptance of death and how they proceed through the healing after loss of the loved one.
