While, undoubtedly, a funeral is a chance to grieve, it can also be an opportunity for healing and reflection. Here, rituals provide solace and a sense of continuity and including an additional symbolic act can helps celebrate the life that was lived.
It can also help to personalise the ceremony and provide a space for family and friends to find comfort in shared memories. Here are a few ideas:
Light a Candle: Lighting a candle can symbolise the light the deceased brought into the lives of others and can be represent their continued light passing to the next generation.
Laying of Flowers: Family members each laying a single stem on the coffin or creating a bouquet of flowers for your loved one can be a very poignant moment.
Memory Cards: Mourners may write down their favourite memories or messages of the deceased, which can be collected and cherished by the family.
Planting a Tree: Some families choose to plant a tree in memory of the loved one, representing life, growth, and a lasting tribute.
Dove Release: This can symbolise a person’s soul being freed from this life or may represent the soul embarking on its journey to the afterlife. Releasing doves can also be a symbol of letting go and act as a cathartic release for families at the beginning of their grieving journey.
Lowering a Standard: where the deceased has been a member of the military, it may be acceptable to lower the flag at the committal.
Mediation: A quiet mass meditation for those who walked a more spiritual path.
Cortège: Personalising the arrival of the coffin with a procession or personalised hearse such as horse drawn carriage or a motorcycle can be a poignant reflection of your loved one’s passions and loves.
